INTER COLLEGIATE SEMINAR ON WOMEN'S RIGHTS : PAST AND PRESENT
The Department of History organised a one day Inter Collegiate seminar on "Women's Rights : Past and Present" on 20th December, 2017. Nearly 17 colleges participated and it was a grand success.

The Department
of History organized a one day seminar on 20th
December, 2017. The theme of the topic was “Women’s Rights: Past and Present”. Nearly 13 colleges were
participated. The seminar was presided over
by our Secretary Rv.Sr.Fransisca Flora and Principal Sr.Dr.Celine Sahaya Mary.
The Head of the Department Dr.J.Saral Evangeline welcomed the gathering. The
inaugural address was given by Principal Sr. Dr.Celine Sahaya Mary and
Secretary Rev.Sr.Fransisca Flora felicitated the gathering. Dr.V.Venkatraman,
Principal Rajapalayam Rajus College, Rajapalayam was the chief guest for the
seminar. He delivered a key note address on the topic “Women in Freedom Struggle”. It was very informative and
interesting.
The first technical session was conducted by Dr.V.Venkatraman,
Principal Rajapalayam Rajus College, Rajapalayam. He gave his lecture on the
topic, “Women’s Rights at Cross Roads
in Colonial Tamilnadu”. He gave
information about the various problems that were faced by women during Colonial rule. He also gave data of women who
faced problems like sati, child marriage etc. He also said that the European
elite women like Annie Besant, Madam Gama played an important role in uplifting
the condition of women in India. Many regional associations also helped a lot
for the development of women. In freedom struggle when men were imprisoned women
actively participated, example Rani Lakshmi Bai, Bhima Bai Gholkar, Chennama of
Karnataka etc. Madam Gama designed the national flag of our country. Dr.Annie Besant
was the first woman President of the Indian National Congress. The first technical
session was followed by lunch break.
The second technical session started at 2.00 P.M. Mr.K.Samidurai,
senior Advocate, President MMBA, Madurai was the resource person. He gave
lecture on the topic “Legal Rights for
Women”. He talked about laws that are enacted for the betterment of women. He
also said about various case studies that are related to women issues. It was a
lively session because many participants came forward to clarify their doubts
The Valedictory session of the seminar was started with a
prayer song. Sr.Fatima Antony, Former Principal Fatima College was the resource
person. She has delivered a lecture on
the topic “Women in Prison”. She
explained the condition of women in prisons.
Further she also said that women in prison are not paid for their work
and few are suffering along with their
children. Her talk was very informative and interesting too.
Thus the seminar came to an end with the National Anthem.
